“Gears of Time” focuses on the player being charged with stopping a time-traveling hacker and preventing the past from changing. You will play as a super-powered future version of yourself who, by traveling through time, is now standing in the way of history as the player tries to stop the evil hacker.

  As I was working on improving the Unity3D interface, one of the things I wanted to do was add an option for players to play those VR videos. A student asked me if I could add this and I had just finished the first prototype for it so I answered “yeah I can do that!”. Two days later I had a working solution. Well, the demo is a little bit too buggy. I wanted to use the Unity3D video object in order to handle the other settings such as fps etc for the movie or video. I did some searching and found that (to my surprise!) it already exists in Unity, so I wasn’t going to be forced to redo everything. And, having just met Unity, I was eager to learn how to use it so it quickly became my number one priority.

  Here is the result:

  Works pretty good and could be very polished (VU Meter, as you can see). I hope this becomes a reality for FBE in the future!

  Update

  The player is now rendered in Unity 3D. It should be as stable as the Flash version (could be best with a few workarounds). The video is display using the Video object in Unity3D. Here is a link to an updated version on Unity’s website:

  We had a little trouble initializing the plugin when WebGL wasn’t supported in the browser. I tested the plugin on Firefox and IE9, iOS Safari 7, the video was able to get 2 K players to run (mostly using video). This is great for educational resources. Sorry about the issues.
